Health & Safety

Yes, it is, and we share the road with traffic. It is simply impossible to plot an off-road bicycle tour along this section of the Maine coast; the roads are too old and narrow for dedicated bike lanes. However, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport are known as bike-friendly communities. Summer traffic moves slowly and drivers watch out for cyclists and pedestrians. Furthermore, our guides are all experienced riders, trained to provide careful instruction and observation to keep you and your group-members safe along the route. Coastal Maine Hike and Bike has a spotless safety record. Please call if you have any concerns (207-967-6065).
Sure, but on our e-bikes, you won’t notice them.
No! If you can ride a conventional pedal bicycle, you can ride an e-bike. You pedal, brake, and shift gears as you would on any other bike, and our guides will demonstrate how to operate the rest. You will not leave our shop without being confident on your e-bike.
We’d be happy to explain the technical details, but in essence, all an e-bike does is magnify your pedaling effort with an electric motor. The harder you pedal, the more help you get, meaning, if you’re trying to get up a hill or reach a faster speed, the bike will detect your effort and compensate accordingly. The sensation is as if you have super powers. Pedaling up a hill feels as easy as pedaling a conventional bike along flat ground.
Yes! Again, if you can ride a regular bike, you are 90 percent of the way there. Our guide will get you the rest of the way.
On our class 2 e-bikes, that’s an option. Our bikes are all equipped with thumb-operated throttles which allow you to activate the electric motor without pedaling — if you wish.
Also an option! The great thing about e-bikes is you can work as much or as little as you want. This allows groups of mixed ability to cycle together.
Our class 2 e-bikes can reach a maximum speed of 20 miles-per-hour. However, we will not go that fast for most of the tour. After all, it is a tour, and at those speeds, you would miss too much. Our tours move at an appropriate pace for sightseeing and for keeping the group together.
If you are looking for a go-fast e-bike experience, we recommend checking out our e-bike rental selection.

No. Maine state law says you must be 16 or older to operate a class 2 e-bike. Groups with younger members are welcome to book one of our conventional pedal bicycle tours, which are just as fun and scenic!
